Vibram FiveFingers
The famous toe shoes from the Italian sole-maker Vibram: how they fit, the main styles and what to know.
Vibram is the Italian company behind the yellow octagon on countless walking boots. Its FiveFingers line, launched in the mid-2000s, gave every toe its own pocket — and became the shoe most people picture when they hear "barefoot running".
Classic styles
- KSO ("Keep Stuff Out"): a lower-cut upper with a strap, for training and everyday use.
- EL-X: a simple slip-on model with an elastic collar.
- Trail models (such as the Spyridon): grippier lugs for paths and fell running.
Fit and sizing
Toe shoes must fit closely: too big and your toes will not reach the end of the pockets. Measure your foot length in centimetres and check it against the brand's own size chart, as sizes differ from normal shoes. Putting them on takes practice — work the toes in one at a time.
Care
Most FiveFingers can be hand-washed in cool water and air-dried. Wearing toe socks reduces odour and makes them easier to put on.
A note on health claims
In 2014, Vibram settled a class action in the United States over claims that FiveFingers could reduce injuries and strengthen feet. The shoes are still loved by many, but they are a different way of moving, not a medical product.
General information, not medical advice. If you have foot, ankle or knee problems, diabetes or poor circulation, speak to a GP or physiotherapist before switching to barefoot shoes.
