Sandals
Xero Shoes & running sandals
Like barefoot, only better: thin, flexible sandals inspired by the huaraches of the Rarámuri runners of Mexico.
Running sandals go back a long way. The Rarámuri (Tarahumara) people of northern Mexico are famous for running great distances in simple huarache sandals, and that tradition inspired modern brands such as Xero Shoes — which started out as "Invisible Shoes".
How thick a sole?
- Around 4 mm: maximum ground feel, best for smooth roads and experienced barefoot runners.
- Around 6 mm: a little more protection for stony paths and everyday wear.
Lacing
Traditional huaraches tie with a lace or cord between the toes and around the ankle. Modern versions use adjustable straps. Get the tension right: too loose and the sandal flaps, too tight and it rubs.
When sandals work best
Warm, dry days, beaches, travel and easy runs. In wet, cold or muddy conditions most people switch to a closed minimalist shoe.
General information, not medical advice. If you have foot, ankle or knee problems, diabetes or poor circulation, speak to a GP or physiotherapist before switching to barefoot shoes.
